Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- There are 140,000 miles of rail in the U.S. and Senator Amy Klobuchar says much of it needs work.

The U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation held a hearing on rail safety, focusing on current challenges for freight and passenger rail systems and strategies for boosting rail safety.

Senator Klobuchar pointed to recent horrific rail accidents, including a Canadian National freight train derailment in Two Harbors as reasons to take a closer look at safety issues.

Two recent train derailments near Two Harbors remain under investigation. Klobuchar says she hopes this hearing will help to prevent future derailments.
