DULUTH, MINN. --- The Korean War Veterans Memorial along the Duluth Lakewalk was vandalized sometime late Wednesday night or early Thursday morning.
Shattered glass surrounded two broken floodlights, which themselves were bent and mangled.
A rock was found about five feet from the memorial with the phrase "Mohammed Wali Seven" written on it.
Police say they don't know whether the rock is in any way connected to the vandalism.
Veterans expressed outrage over the incident.
"When you start destroying property that honors veterans who kept this country free, you're a coward," retired U.S. Marine Corps Sergeant Bob Pearson said. "You're lower than a coward."
Duluth city officials estimate repairing the lights will cost upwards of $800.
There was no immediate estimate on the cost of repairing the damage to the memorial itself.
Anyone that has information about the incident is asked to call the Duluth Property Crime Investigations at (218) 730-5160.
Veterans are looking for donations to fix the memorial. You are asked to send checks to the Korean War Memorial Damage:
