Eveleth, MN (NNCNOW.com) - The unpopular westerly route for the Highway 53 relocation project could be done for good.

An amendment to the recently passed transportation bill would require that the Department of Transportation pick one of the two alternative routes, labeled M-1 or E-2.

Critics of the westerly route say it would cut off local businesses along the current highway.

MnDOT hopes to complete the highway by 2017, when Cliff's Natural Resources will mine underneath the area.
