Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) - The Boys and Girls club held their 41 annual Youth of the Year celebration.

Lt. Gov. Yvonne Prettner Solon gave some words of encouragement on Tuesday to the elected youth of the year.

Five youngsters representing the Northland branches of the Boys and Girls club were competing for the Club's highest honor, Youth of the Year.

Cassie Mahlburg of the Lincoln Park Branch was selected and will go on to compete with other youth on the state and national level.

Nominees are selected based on their academic performance, moral character and public speaking abilities.

Each candidate gave a speech about the hardships they have faced and how being part of the club has helped them over come and achieve their goals.

Lt. Gov. Solon talked about each student and their accomplishments as well as how important the club is for these kids.

"For them to have this club with stable mentors who are here to help them with homework to help guide them to help them make decisions that they face in life...this is a wonderful experience for kids," she said.

Many of the kids who are part of the Boys and Girls club come from unstable homes and face other challenges in their lives.
