Superior, WI (NNCNOW.com) -- The Richard I. Bong Veterans Historical Center opened its doors to the public in 2002 in memory of a farm boy from Poplar who went on to become the flying "Ace of Aces."
World War II Veterans and their families quickly took to the Center which features the treasures and memorabilia of that long ago war.
One story that is preserved at the Memorial are the memories of Ralph Geiger, who was a Marine in World War II.
He fought on the Island of Okinawa, and on the day the island was declared secure, he suffered a life altering injury.
"I got shot up pretty bad then and they took me back by an artillery observation plane," said Geiger.
It is stories like these that the Bong Memorial Center is helping preserve for generations to come.
