Hinckley, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- The man who admitted to the hit and run killing a military veteran on the shoulder of the freeway near Hinckley will serve a year in jail followed by probation.

Derek Sanders had previously pleaded guilty to one count of criminal vehicular homicide in the death of 24-year-old Trevor Langlois. Langlois was struck on the shoulder of I-35 as he tended to his broken down vehicle.

If Sanders slips up or does not meet the conditions of his probation he will be sent back to jail. During his sentencing, 31-year-old Sanders expressed remorse.

Sanders admitted to police that he had been drinking for at least four hours before he hit Langlois, who later died of his injuries.
