Cleveland, OH (NNCNOW.com) - Several feet of ice caused major delays to the start of the Great Lakes shipping season this year.
Shipments of iron ore, coal and cement totaled 980,000 tons, a decrease of 55% compared to a year ago in March.
Coal shipments totaled 103,000 tons, a decrease of 45%.
Cement shipments fell to 52,000 tons, a decrease of 67%.
Iron ore cargos totaled 827,000 tons, a decrease of 47%.
Some of the shipments that were loaded in March were not delivered until April 7 or later.
Officials expect shipment delays to carry over into late April.
