Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient, Mike Colalillo was honored with his own monument and plaque at the Gary New Duluth Veterans Memorial today.
The original Memorial was built in 1952 to commemorate the service of World War Two and Korean veterans from the Gary New Duluth community.
People gathered around the recently renovated memorial to pay respects to Collalilo, and other Veterans at a ceremony honoring military men and women who have fallen in the line of duty.
"Memorial Day is a day we dedicate to the dead. Remember those who fell in defense of this country, the ideals in which this country stands for,” Outreach Director, Senator Klobuchar Veterans Affairs, General Tim Cossalter, said.
At the end of the ceremony, Mayor Don Ness presented a surprise proclamation to World War Two Veteran, Steve Balach. Proclaiming May 26th as "Steve Balach Day". Balach is a Gary New Duluth native who has remained an active leader for veterans in west Duluth.
