Superior, WI (NNCNOW.com) - The pilot of the lead plane involved in the mid-air collision over Superior speaks out for the first time on Dateline Friday.
Matt Fandler was getting into position for a sunset jump when the planes hit.
"I, you know, was just about to radio "jumpers away" and all of a sudden, I hear this loud bang and the windshield shattered. And then I immediately, very soon after, began a descent, an uncontrolled descent," Fandler told Matt Lauer.
The Cessna had lost a wing and was heading straight down, picking up speed as it went. Fandler decided he had to get out.
"First thing I remember thinking is that I need to regain control of this airplane. And I immediately pulled the yoke back to my chest as far as I possibly could. And there was no-- no reaction to it from the airplane," he said.
