Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) -- Authorities recovered the body of a missing Duluth man following a day long search and rescue mission on Lake Superior off Brighton Beach.

The search and rescue team began looking for the 31-year-old man early this morning after he was reported missing last night.

Police located an unoccupied vehicle belonging to the missing person at Brighton Beach around three thirty this morning.

While the temperature above the water today was up around 18 degrees, the temperature at the bottom of the lake was 37 degrees.

"These are long tethers running out along the ice and those are attached to underwater robotics with sonar devices they are actually small underwater vehicles driven by operators on the shore," said David Phillips, St. Louis County Under Sheriff.

Rescue officials say the ice thickness is unpredictable and warn people to not venture out onto the ice.

Authorities believe the man involved was possibly suicidal.

The body will be taken to the St. Louis County Medical examiner's office for a full autopsy.
