Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- A crash along I-35 in Duluth near the Lake Avenue exit led to a 20 car pileup that blocked traffic on the southbound lanes Thursday morning.

A Minnesota State Patrol officer was responding to a two vehicle crash just outside the tunnel near the Lake Avenue exit.

The squad car of the officer was struck by another car attempting to slow down and the car spun out of control resulting in a pile up that stretched throughout the tunnel.

The Southbound lane of the highway was closed for a few hours while tow trucks removed a number of badly damaged cars.

"My car started fishtailing because we caught ice, because we saw the accident ahead with all the cars and then the person right next to me started to spin. Then we came upon all the cars backed up and then not too long after that, cops started coming and ambulances," said Lisa Peterson.

Traffic on Superior Street was bumper to bumper as motorists were rerouted off the highway.

About three minor injuries were reported.
