Washington, D.C. (NNCNOW.com) - The National Rifle Association is speaking out following the shooting tragedy in Newtown, CT last week.
"We were shocked, saddened and heartbroken by the news of the horrific and senseless murders in Newtown," the NRA stated in a statement released Tuesday. "Out of respect for the families, and as a matter of common decency, we have given time for mourning, prayer and a full investigation of the facts before commenting."
The statement went on to say the NRA is "prepared to offer meaningful contributions" to help make sure an event like the school shooting never happens again.
The NRA has laid relatively low since the incident that killed 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary school.
The organization is expected to hold a "major" news conference on Friday in Washington, D.C.
