New Hibbing High School Graduation Standards

February 10, 2012 Updated Feb 10, 2012 at 5:03 PM CDT

HIBBING, MN (Northland's NewsCenter)---Students in the Hibbing school district will have to work a little harder to earn good grade point averages and graduate high school.

Three new measures passed by the Hibbing School Board are designed to make students take their education more seriously.

Failing seventh and eighth grade students who don't pass three core subjects must complete summer school before graduating on to the next grade.

A revised GPA scale will include pluses and minuses, requiring students to work harder to receive the full weight of a grade.

In order to graduate, students must past the Graduation Required Assessment for Diploma or GRAD portion of the high school state math test.

Hibbing Public School Superintendent, Robert Belluzzo says these changes help raise the bar above other districts in the state.

"Frankly, that's where Hibbing wants to be," Belluzzo said. "We want to have a higher academic standard and academic bar than schools across the state. We want our students to do the best, we want our schools to be the best."

The new graduation standards go into effect this summer.
