DULUTH, MN (Northland's Newscenter)---A type of mining that has never been done in Minnesota is being proposed for numerous sites around our region.
Several non–ferrous copper nickel or sulfide mining projects may soon be underway in the Arrowhead Region—–located between the North Shore and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area.
People voiced concerns and asked questions today at a panel discussion conference in Duluth.
Concerned citizens are worried these projects could threaten water quality, ecosystems, and way of life in the surrounding area.
"As one of our presenters said, sulfide mining, in terms of environmental impacts is like taconite mining on steroids," Carl Sack a no sulfide mining activist said.
Polymet is the furthest along of the non–ferrous mining endeavors in our region. The company hopes to release their draft supplemental environmental impact statement later this year.
