DULUTH, MINN. --- The University of Minnesota-Duluth athletics program is no stranger to success and has long been an important piece of the Northland community.

"Clearly, UMD athletics is the premier sports product in our market and we have made a commitment to sports on My 9," Vice-President and Station Manager David Jensch said, "so it just made sense to make UMD sports the heart of that channel."

Five football games, 15 men's hockey games, and four women's hockey games round out the schedule this year, and that's not counting any potential playoff games.

"To be able to bring the viewers to the games is a dream come true," Northland's NewsCenter Sports Director Tom Hansen said.

The new TV schedule comes the same season as the opening of Amsoil Arena, the new home for UMD Bulldog hockey.

"It couldn't be a more exciting time to be doing this," UMD Athletic Director Bob Nielson said, "with a new television partner, as we enter into a new, state-of-the-art facility that people, now, who aren't at the games will be able to get a sense of Amsoil Arena."

"This is truly a historic year for UMD athletics" Hansen said. "They're only going to make one move from the old DECC to Amsoil Arena and to be a part of that every step of the way will be fun. It will be fun to document and see the athletes as they make the move."

It's a great deal for sports fans in the Northland, and Nielson said the credit has to go to UMD's student-athletes.

"We've got a great group of student-athletes," Nielsen said, "and it's a joy for us to be able to work with them and I hope the community takes a great deal of pride in them."
