Thompson Township, MN (NNCNOW.com)-- An Esko woman has been arrested in connection with a fatal car crash in Carlton County on Saturday.
The 25-year-old woman is in custody in Carlton County pending formal charges of criminal vehicular operation.
A 34-year-old woman is dead and two others were hospitalized following the crash.
Kari Luoma, 34, of Cloquet has been identified as the deceased. According to the Carlton County Sheriff's Department, alcohol consumption was a contributor to the accident.
Authorities responded to the intersection of Canosia Road and North Cloquet Road at 5:42 p.m., on Saturday.
A vehicle turning east onto North Cloquet Road was stuck by a vehicle heading north on Canosia Road. Luoma was pronounced dead at the scene.
A witness with emergency medical military experience says he tried to provide aid to the victims just before medical personnel arrived.
"Another Sheriff had arrived, he must have been on the road or something, he was there all the sudden and he was looking for a pulse, I was looking for a pulse, I found one he found one, it was a real weak pulse, but it was there and we had it for about a couple minutes, we had a pulse and by that point first responders had arrived." said Daniel Johannesson, witness.
Carlton County officials expect the suspect to be formally charged as early as Tuesday morning.
