Parks Fund Neighborhood Grants Announced

Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.COM) -- Duluth Mayor Don Ness announced the organizations chosen to receive the Fall Parks Fund Neighborhood Grants, pending City Council approval.

The City made $26,500 available as part of the Parks Fund to support projects and initiatives which would enhance and improve city parks and recreation.

The projects are:

-Cyclists of Gitchee Gummee Shores; Mountain Bike Trail System, Sustainability Upgrades, will receive $5,000.
- Gary-Morgan Park Hockey Association; Player Boxes Rebuild & Rink Repair, will receive $5,000.
-Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory, Inc.; Interpretive Signage for Hawk Ridge Nature Reserve, will receive $5,000.
-Park Point Community Club; Lafayette Summer Youth Program, will receive $3,200.
-Woodland Amateur Hockey Association; Public Skating Rink Resurface, will receive $5,000.
-YMCA of Duluth; Woodland Community Center, Garden and Kitchen, will receive $3,076.

The Neighborhood Grant program is designed to provide direct support for community groups and organizations to add value to City parks. The City is partnering with the Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation which accepted and processed the applications.

Proposals were reviewed by a committee with recommendations for funding presented to the Parks Commission then for final approval from the City Council.

City officials say priority was given to projects that support one or more of the following elements of the Parks and Recreation Plan:
-Improve the quality of existing parks
-Focus on connecting the community through trails and bikeways
-Have fewer, but higher quality recreation buildings
-Enhance stewardship of natural resources
-Expand partnerships with schools for community recreations and gathering, and increase use and recognition of volunteers and volunteer groups.
