Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) - Voters in St. Louis County's District 2 have chosen Patrick Boyle to take the seat once held by the late Steve O'Neil.

Boyle won 2,783 to 1,465 in the race against former Duluth City Councilor Jim Stauber, according to St. Louis County. That's 65 percent of the votes.

A little more than 4,200 ballots were cast in 11 precincts.

When reached for comment Tuesday night, Stauber congratulated Boyle on his win. Stauber said he has no plans right now, but wants to keep his passion for politics alive.

The last time Saint Louis County had a special election was in February 2001. Then District 6 Commissioner Liz Prebich resigned her seat after falling ill to cancer.

Steve O'Neil died of a rare form of thyroid cancer in July.

His wife Angie Miller was filling his seat until a new commissioner was elected.
