St. Paul, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- A plaque honoring American Indian veterans will be placed on state Capitol grounds at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 22.

The memorial plaque will be unveiled Thursday and remain there to honor American Indian veterans who have served their country.

American Indians have historically served in the U.S. Armed Forces at rates proportionately higher than any other group of Americans, even serving in wars as early as the American Revolution, the Minnesota Indian Affairs Council said.

The council would like to note that since 2005 Chairwoman Erma Vizenor of the White Earth Nation and the Minnesota Indian Affairs Council has been working to secure a memorial for American Indian Veterans in Minnesota.
