Possible Change of Venue in Jouppi Trial

January 11, 2013 Updated Jan 11, 2013 at 11:08 AM CST

Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com)-- A Duluth Police officer, charged with assault for allegedly beating up a man at a detox center, could be tried outside St. Louis County.

Video released by the Duluth Police Department shows Richard Jouppi repeatedly punching a 50-year-old man in September of 2012.

Jouppi was supposed to have a pre-trial hearing Thursday, but the defenses request for a change of venue delayed that action.

Members of the Native American community protested a change of venue saying it's important for the community to track this trial.

"Me as a community member wish to see a fair and equal justice," said Fond du Lac Elder Skip Sandman.

Jouppi is due back in court in February.
