Red Cliff Band to Remove Barrels from Lake Superior Again

Bayfield County, WI (NNCNOW.com) --- The Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa plans to bring 23 barrels up from Lake Superior to be incinerated in Michigan.

The 23 barrels were originally removed from the lake back in 2012 by the Band, however crews had to return the barrels to the bottom of Lake Superior. At the time, the Red Cliff Band did not have the proper permits to transport the barrels.

The Band has since been granted the permits to move the barrels and plans to remove the barrels sometime in September and transport them to Michigan to be incinerated.

According to the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, the U.S. Army dumped just under 1,500 barrels into Lake Superior between Duluth and Two Harbors, from 1959 into 1962.

According to the band and project leaders, there is no immediate hazard from the barrels.
