Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) - Not even 24 hours after the leadership handover of the 2014 John Beargrease Marathon, organizers say the response has been overwhelming.
A unanimous vote by the board of directors Monday put the race into the hands of a new team, many of whom have experience with the Beargrease and other major events.
Jason Rice, a former president of the board, said they're starting with a clean slate, but adds the old board wasn't far from reaching the $50,000 cost.
Now they need to raise money to provide an incentive for more mushers to sign up.
Rice said a number of businesses have already said they'll back the 2014 race.
"There are literally dozens of people rallying around this effort right now and the number is growing. I feel confident we're going to reach the numbers of we need for sponsors, volunteers, veterinarians for every component. The balls are all in the air and being juggled right now."
Rice said a vote will take place Wednesday on board positions.
