Duluth, MN (Northlands NewsCenter) -- The man accused of shooting a Lake City Minnesota police officer and then himself was a member of the Wisconsin National Guard in the process of being discharged.

25-year-old Alan J. Sylte's records show he was from Hager City, Wisconsin and a member of the 950th engineer company in Spooner Wisconsin.

Private Sylte joined the Wisconsin National Guard in February of 2009.
He completed one tour of active duty in support of operation New Dawn in 2010.

Lt. Colonel Jackie Guthrie of the Wisconsin National Guard says Sylte was in the process of being discharged for failing to report for military duty in Spooner starting early this summer.

"Private Sylte stopped reporting for duty this past summer. Whenever a serviceman doesn't report for duty we go through the process of contacting them, finding out why and if they continue to not report to duty, just like a civilian job when you don't come to work, eventually you lose your job."

32-year-old Officer Shawn Schneider was shot in the head and neck while responding to the domestic situation on Monday. Today he remains in critical condition at Saint Mary's Hospital in Rochester.

The firearm used against Officer Schneider belonged to Sylte's brother.
The affidavit states that the home was surrounded by officers from about 10 local, county and state agencies

Officers are still piecing things together; however, the domestic complaint states that Sylte was involved with a 17 year old girl who had terminated their relationship in April.

Records show Sylte sent the girl 282 text messages over the past weekend and she was able to escape the home when authorities arrived on the scene.
