Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) - The Zeitgeist Arts Café was packed to the gills Sunday for the third annual Smelt Run Puppet Parade.
The Magic Smelt Puppet Troupe hosted the event which traditionally begins with a parade run from Canal Park to the Zeitgeist in Downtown Duluth.
While this years run was cancelled due to rainy weather, that didn't dampen the festivities which included music by the Minneapolis–based Brass Messengers, silver smelt costumes and – of course – a smelt fry.
The event was founded three years ago as a way to bring together music, art and the tradition of the smelt run.
"I was looking, you know trying to figure out how to apply myself in Duluth," said Jim Ouray, Director of the Magic Smelt Puppet Troupe. "I live at Park Point and the first time I saw the smelt running, and I saw all of the fishermen and all the bonfires and the great excitement around the smelt run I thought, 'A–ha!'"
The Magic Smelt Puppet Troupe hosted a free workshops for puppet, mask, and costume construction for those in need of a little creative outfit help.
