July 30, 2014 Updated Jul 30, 2014 at 10:46 AM CST

Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- St. Louis County law enforcement had a close call Tuesday while they were transporting an inmate to the St. Louis County Jail from the Public Safety Building.

When the man was taken out of the squad car to be taken into the jail, he broke free and ran away.

Moments later officers say he attempted to break into a church on Arrowhead Road in Duluth.

Officers say they picked up the escapee at the church within minutes of his escape.

The man's arrest earlier Tuesday stemmed from burglary charges, but now charges of trying to break into the church have also been added.
