May 23, 2013 Updated May 23, 2013 at 1:52 PM CST

Superior, WI (NNCNOW.com) --- The Superior Police Department is reporting an increase of thefts from storage units.

Authorities say that had many reports over the last week of thefts from storage units. They are asking that residents check their storage units and call 9-1-1 to report any thefts or suspicious activity you might see around storage units.

The thieves are cutting locks off of the storage units and then replacing the lock with one of their own.

Police recommend that all storage unit rents use large, secure storage locker locks to prevent the locks from being cut. They also recommend that owners write down all serial numbers on property and engrave property to help prevent it from being sold at a pawn shop.
