EVELETH, MN (Northland's NewsCenter)---Iron Range technical college students are putting their skills to the test this weekend in a statewide competition.

Several students at the Mesabi Range Community and Technical College in Eveleth will compete in the 45th Annual Skills USA State Leadership and Skills Championship Conference in Bloomington.

At the conference, technical students from across the state compete in various categories ranging from advertising and architectural design to carpentry, collision repair and cosmetology.

One group of students from the welding club at MRCTC created a chapter display that promotes taconite, timber and tourism industries on the Iron Range.

"We are given a set of instructions that we are supposed to follow," Billy Pocrnich said. "A certain height, a certain width, a certain depth. We can come up with any kind of idea that we want to represent our chapter up here."

If the students place they will travel to the national competition in Missouri near the end of June.
