Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) - Apple unveiled a showcase of new products Tuesday at an event in San Francisco, including a new variation of the iPad tablet.
Apple introduced iPad Air just in time for the holiday season.
It's a thinner, faster version, weighing in at just one pound compared with 1.4 pounds for the previous pad.
The new iPad Air is eight times faster than the original iPad that came out in 2010. This is the fifth generation of the table, expected to go on sale November 1st starting at $499 for a model with 16 gigabytes of memory.
"I-pad is delivering a new vision for mobile computing, unlike anything that has come before and it all began with this amazing 9.7 inch multi touch display and the incredible power it enabled for software. The ability to hold the internet in your hands as you surf the web and do your email, make facetime calls," said Phil Schiller with Apple marketing.
Apple also unveiled a new, thinner and lighter 13 inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display and a larger model with a 15" monitor.
Apple's new operating system, OS X Mavericks, is now available for download.
Rival Microsoft launched the "Surface 2," an updated version of its Windows-based tablet.
Nokia also entered the tablet fray with it's 10" Windows-based Lumia 2520.
