Text for Life Helps Thousands; Preventing Suicide
Cloquet, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- According to the staff at Carlton County Public Health and Human Services, the Northland has a higher than average rate of teen suicide. The health service staff in Cloquet found that teens and young adults won't phone for help, but they will send text messages. That led to the start of a program called "Text for Life". The text messages go to a trained volunteer who offers advice and referrals to medical professionals. Program director Dave Lee says four thousand people have been helped through text messages so far. "From what we hear from the kids and also just the numbers of kids that are using it," says Lee. "The kinds of situations they are sharing with the counselors, it's making me believe it's making an impact." The Text For Life service is available in 49 of Minnesota's 87 counties. To use it, text the word "life" to 8-3-9-8-6-3.
