Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) - While many consider the Northland a gem in and of itself, the region is also famous for producing its fair share of actual, unique gems.

As part of their "Groundbreaking Summer Programs for Adults," the Duluth Public Library invited noted agate collector Terry Roses to speak about Minnesota's rich history with agates.

The speech focused on where to find, and how to identify, Lake Superior agate.

Roses also shared with the crowd some of the most impressive gems from his collection.

While agate collecting is a worldwide passion, Roses says agates from this region are some of the most famous in the world, "because of the rich red tones which is because they contain iron," said Roses. "This is an iron region, so our agates have picked up the reds, and the whites."

Collectors in the crowd even got to have their agates appraised before the event was over.
