The Sundew's Journey

August 6, 2010

DULUTH, MINN. --- Leading the tall ships parade of sails was the homegrown former Coast Guard Cutter Sundew.

The 180-foot Sundew was built in Duluth back in 1944, and served on Lake Superior from 1980 to 2004.

The ship was succeeded by the Coast Guard Cutter Alder and purchased last year by Northlander Jeff Foster.

Foster said thousands of volunteer hours have gone into restoring the vessel, and he's proud to be part of the tall ship parade.

"People have seen it here in the harbor for 30 years and it's just part of the community," Foster said. "It's something that people have pride in."

About 80 people set sail on the Sundew Thursday afternoon to lead the tall ships under the Aerial Lift Bridge.
