Thomson, Carlton a step closer to proposed merger
(NNCNOW.com) --- Two neighboring Northland communities are in the final stages of a possible merger. A meeting Tuesday night provided information to residents of both Carlton and Thomson and allowed them to raise question and voice their concerns. Those in favor of joining the towns cite a decrease in the overall cost of utility and public services, in addition to eliminating redundancy. Those opposed worry that the smaller town of Thomson will be underrepresented, and it would risk losing its sense of community identity. “Thomson will always be Thomson, and that's a big part of how people feel over there,” Mayor Kitty Bureau said. “But Carlton will always be Carlton.” A referendum vote will take place by mail on November 5 to determine if the merger will move forward.
