Speed, distraction factors in Highway 53 crash

Cotton, MN (NNCNOW.com) - The Minnesota State Patrol says 20-year-old Robert Abts of Big Lake, was distracted and driving at a high speed when his vehicle rear ended the flatbed trailer of a semi in the southbound lane of Highway 53 in Cotton Monday night.

Abts was taken by helicopter to Essentia Health-St. Mary's in Duluth with non-life threatening injuries.

His two passengers, 20-year-old Airlea Defoe and Tiffany Skinaway were taken by ambulance to St. Mary's with non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the semi was not injured.

The incident happened just before 6:30 p.m. Monday.
