Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) - On Friday, November 22nd, 2013 the 56th Annual Christmas City of the North Parade will be held on Superior Street in Downtown Duluth. This year the Parade will start at 6:20 p.m.
The parade route will be the same as last year. Parade units will assemble on Railroad Street. The parade will travel east on Railroad Street to Lake Avenue, proceed North on the Lake Avenue Viaduct, then turn west on Superior Street to the termination point at 5th Avenue West.
Traffic diversions will begin at 2:00p.m. The parade should end approximately 8:30 p.m.
At 2:00 p.m. Railroad Street will close between Lake Avenue and Canal Park Drive to facilitate the set-up of KBJR 6 & Range 11's television coverage.
At 3:00 pm the Railroad Street closure will be extended to Garfield Avenue for parade lineup.
The southbound I-35 on-ramp at 26th Ave E will close at 5:30pm and re-open at approximately 8:30pm. Traffic will be directed West on London Road during the closure.
At 5:45 pm the remainder of the Parade route will begin to close to traffic.
The only access to the Canal Park area and Park Point will be from the Lake Avenue Viaduct to Canal Park Drive. Traffic around the Railroad Street area will be very limited. Lake Avenue South will be closed to northbound traffic at Buchanan Street; however the Lake Avenue entrance to Red Lobster will remain open. All other northbound traffic should detour to Canal Park Drive.
At approximately 5:450 p.m. I-35 Northbound and Southbound exits onto Lake Avenue will be closed for duration of the parade. Travelers going to Canal Park or Park Point will have to use alternate routes from the east to access Lake Avenue.
Access to the DECC will be either down 6th Avenue West to Michigan Street, left on Michigan Street to 5th Avenue West, then down 5th Ave West onto Harbor Drive, and around the back of the DECC to the East gate near the Irvin, OR I-35 northbound to the 5th Ave West exit and turn right down to Harbor Drive. Motorists are urged to take the I-35 northbound route to the DECC.
Superior Street traffic should use Michigan, First, or Second Streets during the parade.
DTA buses will use 1st Street for Westbound routes, and 2nd Street for Eastbound routes.
-Superior Street after 5:00 p.m. from 6th Avenue West to Lake Avenue, both sides. This will include handicap zones.
-Michigan Street after 5:00 p.m., between 5th and 6th Avenues West, both sides. This will include handicap zones.
-Both sides of 1st Avenue West from Michigan Street to Superior Street
-The first 4 metered spots on the lower side of 1st Street west of the Holiday Center Ramp Exit.
-Harbor Drive is no parking.
Cars parked in violation of the posted no parking will be tagged and may be towed after 5:00 p.m.
The best routes to the DECC or Aquarium lots are:
- From Northbound I-35, take the 5th Ave W Exit Ramp, then turn right.
- From Southbound I-35 (Enter at 21st Ave E), the only exit is 5th Ave W, then turn left.
- From the Downtown area, take 1st Street West to 6th Ave W, down to MICHIGAN Street, left to
5th Ave W, then turn right.
- All traffic OUT of Aquarium & DECC Lots can only proceed up 5th Ave W to take either the
Northbound I-35 Entrance Ramp, OR continue North on 5th Ave W to turn right on MICHIGAN
Street to either 1st or 3rd Ave E. I-35 Southbound can be accessed by turning LEFT on 3rd St to
Mesaba Ave, then turn left.
