Police: 6-year-old Bemidji girl dies from exposure to cold

Bemidji, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- A heartbreaking discovery on a sub-zero day has a Minnesota family mourning the loss of a child. This tragedy is playing out today in Bemidji, Minn.

When authorities found the girl early Thursday morning, temperatures in the Bemidji area were 27 below zero with a wind chill of 40 below.

A six-year-old girl was found dead outside, with signs of exposure to the frigid elements. At around 6:30 a.m. Thursday, the Bemidji Police Department responded to 924 Carter Circle SE, Bemidji MN on reports of a weather-related incident.

Officers and emergency medical personnel arrived to treat the girl who was pronounced dead at the scene. It appears she died of exposure.

Authorities are not sure how or when the child got outside of the building where she lived with her mother.

Forensic exam results are expected in the coming days.

Police say they will release the child's name when all of her family has been notified.

In the meantime, the Bemidji School District has counselors on hand for children to talk to.
