Chief Warrant Officer Charles Young is moving double time at the Chub Lake Tree Farm in Carlton.
He just got back from training with the Army Guard transportation company based in Chisholm.
He has three days until shipping out for Afghanistan for nine months.
Young will miss out on several holidays with his wife, Sandra.

"Christmas, New Year's, and a lot of birthdays and anniversaries." said Young.

Jim Whorton, owner of the Chub Lake Tree Farm, is a former Army Warrant Officer himself.
That's one reason he takes part in the Trees For Troops program every year.

"The program provides trees to families who have one or more parents who are deployed overseas in a war zone." said Whorton.

During the holiday season, people donate money or outright buy trees to ship to families of service members.
Charles Young appreciates that very much; both the donators and Jim the grower.

"It's great that there are people out there that still support the military the way he does." said Young.

But, Jim Whorton doesn't do this alone.
Fedex provides the shipping and the handling is done by Cloquet's Army Guard Cavalry unit.
And, Whorton isn't the only Christmas tree grower.

"The Pajoric tree farm in Moose Lake, Doug Hoffbauer near Proctor, Joe Walsh around Brookston and folks like that; Eric's Evergreens in Butternut, Wisconsin. The whole Arrowhead regions works out." said Whorton.

For Charles Young, 31 year veteran of the Army Guard, it's nice to know someone is looking out for the home front while he focuses on answering his nation's call to service.

"You go over there and try not to think of the holidays and usually for us it's just another day. For her, it's harder for the family. Its hard for them not having us around." said Young.

In Carlton, Dave Anderson, KBJR 6 and Range 11.
KDLH 3.

Trees For Troops weekend this year will be December 6th to the 8th.
The trees will be delivered to nearly 60 military bases covering every branch of the armed services
