Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) - A truck driver was hospitalized with second degree burns Tuesday following an unusual explosion in West Duluth.

The explosion happened inside a semi truck operated by an International Falls company that collects used oil from area businesses.

The Duluth Fire Department found the driver of the semi truck with severe burns to his torso.

Assistant Fire chief Erik Simonson says this type of explosion is very rare

"This is not common - very uncommon actually. It's very difficult to get the right mixture going on in which you have oxygen, enough fuel to do this. But my understanding is that there was a backfire on the gasoline driven pump and that is what caused the ignition source."

The driver was rushed to Essentia Health St. Mary's Medical Center for treatment.
