Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) - They've put their lives on the line for their communities, and this week, the Twin Ports are helping honor them during Peace Officers Memorial Day

Enger Tower in Duluth was illuminated in blue Wednesday night as a symbolic gesture for both the Memorial day and Police week.

The national day of remembrance is celebrated in Washington D.C. as thousands of law enforcement officers from around the world participate in a number of events to honor those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice.

Superior Police was expected to continue the recognition on Thursday.

"The members of these departments put themselves in harms way for the good of the people that are out here. And sometimes those officers end up giving their lives in service to the people in the communities. This is one special week to remember those officers," said deputy chief Matt Markon with Superior Police.

Superior Police and the Douglas County Sheriff will host the Twin Ports area law enforcement memorial service in the atrium of the Government Center Thursday at noon.
