UMD Sorority Rallies for "Kidney for Kelsey"
Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- Kelsey Krautkremar was only in high school when she found out she had kidney disease. Now, a student at UMD, and in desperate need of a healthy kidney, her sorority sisters and class mates have rallied around her. It came as a total shock. "It was hard at first to come to terms that this is real life. I'm 20 years old and I never thought this would be something I'd be dealing with this young," said Kelsey Krautkremar. Kidney disease has made this young and active college student to begin the search for a donor. "In March this year I found out I needed a kidney transplant because my kidney function had gone from 34-percent to 18-percent in just one year,"said Krautkremar. Kelsey has sought the help of family and friends but finding a type O blood match has been difficult. She has been placed on a donor's list but it could take up to six years to find a match. "I was told I had weeks to months before I needed a kidney transplant or dialysis," said Krautkremar. "When Kelsey's friends found out about her condition, they surrounded her with support...and soon Kidney for Kelsey was born." "We are doing grilled cheese today and we have Caribou Coffee as well...we also are doing a raffle in which if people decide to donate they can actually have a chance to win a ten dollar gift certificate to any of the UMD restaurants," said fundraiser organizer, Allie Hanson. Kidney for Kelsey has also held a bake-sale, made and sold bracelets and plans on getting T-shirts to sell in the near future. The Kidney for Kelsey twitter account is another way people show their support for Kelsey who friends say couldn't be more deserving. "She's really a caring person and I think it shows how much strength she has to just go for this. She's just so, she's really grateful,"said Hanson. "I felt like I had to do this by myself but that's not it all. People want to help and be involved, hence today," said Kelsey is a dancer, an athlete, and active community member and remains positive in her quest for a kidney.
