Lockdown lifted on U.S. Capitol following reports of shots fired
Washington, D.C. (NNCNOW.com) - One woman is dead following an attempted security breach at the White House and car chase near the U.S. Capitol Building. Police say it started at the White House when a female driver rammed her car into a gate. After failing to smash her way in she was pursued by the Secret Service as she headed toward the U.S.. Capitol. There she was surrounded by police. When the car continued moving officers opened fire. During the altercation a police car crashed into a security bollard, injuring the officer driving. The Capitol building itself and the six Senate and House office buildings were locked down, with lawmakers and staffers told to shelter in their offices. Tourists ran for cover, some hunkering down for shelter wherever they could find it. Police sources say the female suspect had a child in her car during the chase.
