US DOT issues emergency order to keep crude oil shipments safe

May 7, 2014 Updated May 7, 2014 at 3:55 PM CDT

Washington, D.C. (NNCNOW.com) - An emergency order issued by the US Department of Transportation now requires all railroads to notify emergency officials before moving large shipments of crude oil.

The order focuses on trains carrying oil from the Bakken region and urges those shipping oil to use tank car designs with the highest level of integrity available.

The notification must include estimated volumes of oil being transported, frequencies of anticipated train traffic and the route through which Bakken crude oil will be transported.

The order comes on the heels of numerous train accidents across the US, including the December 30th train derailment in North Dakota that prompted the evacuation of an entire town down.
