Duluth, MN (Northlands NewsCenter)

History was made in Duluth this morning.

Fifteen community organizations have come together to battle racism in the Northland.

To passerby's at the University of the Minnesota-Duluth, this display case might be easy to overlook but for Tory White, what's being placed inside is of extreme importance.

"To effectively talk about racism and take a stand against racism we need to take a stand against white privilege and that begins with naming white privilege"

White privilege is the issue of a new campaign launched Tuesday Morning by a collaborative community organizations in the Twin-Ports.

90 percent of Duluthians are white. The Un-fair campaign is trying to bring awareness to the unearned advantages they say white people regularly receive because of the color of their skin.

"It's not just students putting up posters that are part of this campaign, if your driving down the streets of Duluth and you happen to see one of these four billboards that's the un-fair campaigns work as well"

A marketing campaign, workshops, and awareness seminars will take place over the next few months to help raise difficult questions.

Organizers of the campaign gathered in solidarity, kicking off the first day.

Ricky Defoe, part of the Duluth American Indian Commission feels the campaign begins a conversation that is long overdue.

"We see these things, we hear these things we feel the impact"

Defoe feels this project will impact the minds of northlanders.

"I think this campaign will then bring out some deeper issues and discourse and things and get to the answer of way there is so much disparity in our community"

For Tory White, who plans a future dedicated to solving these complex issues, this campaign came just in time to the right region.

"There is an issue as there is everywhere but it seems to be very heavy here and I want to talk about it and it's a great venue for that.
