Veterans Affairs Secretary resigns

Washington, D.C. (NNCNOW.com) --- A surge of allegations of mismanagement, falsification of records and problems at Vets Administration facilities across the country has resulted in the resignation of Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki.

"After many years of honorable service to our nation, I believe Secretary Shinseki did the right thing for our veterans by stepping down. While he made significant progress on a number of fronts as Secretary, there has clearly been a systemic problem in the VA in delivering care to veterans on a timely basis," U.S. Sen. Al Franken (D–Minn) said.

Shinseki said before leaving that he has initiated the removal of senior leaders of the Phoenix V–A medical center, which has been in the spotlight lately for mistreatment of veterans.
