MADISON – Waterfowl hunters heading out for the Sept. 25 opener of the northern duck hunting season are reminded to be alert for strong currents, unusually high waters and floating debris resulting from recent heavy rains and associated run off on a number of waterways in the northern duck zone.
“Waterfowl hunters know to be prepared for cold, wet conditions. But flood conditions and high water creates a different situation and hunters should be extra cautious,” said Todd Schaller, DNR conservation warden and head of DNR’s recreational safety program. “Expect the unexpected and be alert to conditions that could change rapidly.”
“In addition to being extra cautious on the water be sure to let someone know your hunting plan, where you’ll be and when you’ll return,” Schaller said. “Then, stick to the plan unless you are able to contact that person to say the plan has changed.”
Southern Zone Hunters
The Mississippi River is not expected to crest in LaCrosse until next week on Wednesday Sept. 29th, and a day or two later in Prairie du Chien.
It is possible some towns may consider closing boat landings due to flooding and piers that may be underwater.
Hunters with plans for the Oct. 2 opener are advised to check local conditions before traveling or have alternative plans such as looking for inland areas that may attract waterfowl.
