Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- The Duluth Elks Club honored one of Minnesota's own War Heroes during its annual Veterans Day Celebration.
Wayne "Whitey" Johnson from Beaver Bay is one of only two living "Flying Tiger" fighter pilots left in the world.
The 92-year-old joined the Air Corp on December 8 , 1941..the day after Pearl Harbor was bombed.
Johnson says there was an outpouring of patriotism after the bombings, with nearly 500 guys lining up to join the military that next morning.
Johnson went through school to be a fighter pilot and was sent to China where he became a decorated member of the Elite "Flying Tigers".
"I think its important for the public to know that there are people- our military- that are willing to take great risks , willing to submit to injury, even death to protect our country," said Wayne Johnson.
Johnson released a memoir last year entitled "From Farm Kid to Flying Tiger to Attorney"
