Wanted: Donated Vension Meat During Minnesota's Firearms Season

Duluth, MN (Northland's NewsCenter) --- During firearm season, hunters will have the opportunity to not only feed themselves, but in-need neighbors as well.

The State of Minnesota will cover the processing fees of all deer harvested and donated to Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank.

The program founded by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, in cooperation with the Minnesota Department of Agriculture provides a great source of protein for people in-need while reducing local deer populations.

Firearm season begins this Saturday, November 3 and ends Sunday, November 25.

“High protein items like venison are in high demand at our region’s food shelves,” said Shaye Moris, Executive Director, Second Harvest. “This program makes it easy for hunters to donate and help our neighbors in need.”

Hunters willing to donate their harvest, simply bring their tagged and field dressed deer with hide intact to state-registered processor, Gamache and Sons Custom Meat Processing,10 Farmstead Road, Esko, MN.

Once processed, Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank will pick up and distribute the donation to Northland food shelves, soup kitchens, shelters and people in need.

Already this year, 497 pounds of highly valued venison have been donated during the City of Duluth’s September Bow Hunt. The protein rich donation provided 398 meals to in-need Northland residents.
