Ashland, WI (NNCNOW.com) --- An Ashland City Councilor announced today she's challenging Representative Sean Duffy in the race for Wisconsin's 7th congressional district seat next year.

Kelly Westlund made the official announcement today during a news conference in Wausau, WI.

Westlund was appointed to the Ashland City Council for Ward 11 in 2011 and re-elected in 2012.

The Wisconsin GOP sent out a statement Monday stating Westlund has a lack of experience and is quote "out of touch with the values of Wisconsin families.”

"I think that is completely absurd and if you want to talk about being out of touch with Wisconsin Families then why don't we talk about Sean Duffy complaining about how he is struggling to get by on a $174,000 a year when the average household in this district is a third of that or less,” Westlund said. “Sean Duffy says one thing in the district and then goes back to Washington and consistently votes against his constituents here in Wisconsin."

Westlund says she has worked in Wisconsin politics for several years.

She was the Executive Director for the Alliance for Sustainability and has worked for several other electoral campaigns canvassing.
