Madison, WI (NNCNOW.com) - Democratic lawmakers in Wisconsin are crying foul after they say an organization with close ties to a Republican lobbying group has received a half million dollar taxpayer funded grant.

The grant, intended to go toward the preservation of hunting and fishing traditions in the state has been allocated to a group called United Sportsmen of Wisconsin by the Sporting Heritage Committee.

Democratic Representative Nick Milroy cited an investigation by the Milwaukee Journal sentinel that he says shows the group has no history of doing the kind of training that would qualify for the grant.

He says Wisconsin taxpayers should be outraged by what he calls a blatant abuse of power.

"The people who are most affected by this are the sportsman, but every tax payer in Wisconsin should be outraged that the Governor and the Republicans in Wisconsin are allowing taxpayer money to go to a shady group like this," said Rep. Nick Milroy, D-South Range.

In response to the public attention, DNR Secretary Kathy Steep, on Wednesday, called for a Public Hearing on the matter to be held Thursday Morning, after which the Grant was officially approved by the committee.
