Duluth, MN
Any builder or buyer knows, it's all about location, location, location.
And at Bluestone Lofts that's just the first step to being green.

Bluestone Manager Mark Lambert said, "What we're able to do is allow residents to come and go from the University without having a need for cars."

Providing a close location to campus will hopefully reduce the number of cars on the road, but that's just the beginning of this project.
Bluestone Lofts also created a sophisticated underground water runoff retaining system.

"We actually catch it, pond it, and by retaining it allow it to infiltrate back in as opposed to sheet off," says Lambert, "Obviously with some of the concerns that had happened in Duluth recently with the flooding, you know storm water is an ever bigger issue than before."

This system also reduces sediment that's released back into the lakes.
And of course the building its self has many other features to make it energy efficient.

"When you look at this building, this will probably be one of the most energy efficient buildings in Duluth. High energy efficient windows, sidings that are resistant to sun and heat, insulations that are better than anything before. So when you look at per foot to operate and heat this building it's probably going to be a fraction of what some of the older buildings in Duluth are getting." Lambert said.

Bluestone Manager Mark Lambert says Duluth has a great set of standard for sustainable building that will continue to green up every new development.

"As each year progresses, there's more products available, it's easier to accomplish the standards. So I think every building that you're going to be seeing going forward is going to be even more green, even more sustainable than the one before it."
