Being green doesn't have to be only about helping the environment, but also it can help people in need. Habitat for Humanity's ReStore is aiming to help people in need by recycling and reusing things that you would just toss in the garbage. In this weeks Your Green Life, Meteorologist Adam Lorch brings us the story from Superior where sustainability and community are going hand in hand.

With a down economy folks are always looking for a good deal. That's why thrift shops and used good stores are making such a resurgence.
But the ReStore in Superior also specialized in helping the community through Habitat for Humanity. And anyone can help by donating.

Teresa Backes, the Program Manager ReStore said, "It helps save, contractors can bring stuff if they are remodeling apartments or homes, you get to save on dumpster fees. A homeowner has a place to bring their materials, cabinets, ceiling fans, you name it. And it doesn't go into the landfill."

All the proceeds collected go directly to helping families in need. And every dollar spent helps keep a clean environment.

"For every dollar that is spent at the restore it saves over 30 pounds of product going into a landfill." Backes says.

The ReStore isn't just about reducing, reusing and recycling. Its also about re-purposing, taking something old and turning it into something new and useful.

"We take our bi–fold doors and we separate them down and right now I'm using them for one of my displays for our trim work and it helps house that." said Backes.

With a little creativity you can turn any old trinket into a decorative, or functional addition to your home or other projects.

Backes tells me, "Its not just homes, people can think when they are building their ice houses or hunting shacks, we have things in here that work for all that."
